Where is AI regulation heading in the region

Through an analysis of recent legislative dynamics in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru, the publication examines how the regulatory debate on artificial intelligence is taking shape in the region and which issues manage to gain traction (or remain sidelined) on the public agenda.

The study warns of a trend toward fragmented and reactive regulations, as comprehensive normative proposals face stagnation or see their scope reduced. At the same time, it identifies concerning gaps in key areas such as protecting information integrity against disinformation, technology-facilitated gender-based violence, and the ecological footprint of technological development, marked by the high energy and water consumption of data centers.

Furthermore, the document contextualizes this scenario within the regional political and economic landscape, characterized by growing geopolitical alignment and the strong influence of big tech companies on government policies.
